Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cosmetic restoration used to improve the shape of the tooth or to strengthen the tooth. The process involves applying a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth in order to cover and restore its shape, size and strength. The dental crowns are cemented into place and will fully encase the entire visible portion of the tooth that lies at and above the gum line. These crowns are often used for teeth that have been broken, partially destroyed, worn down or have tooth decay.

Reasons & Uses For Dental Crowns

  1. Covering a tooth with a large filling as added support for when there is not much tooth left
  2. Restoration of a broken tooth or a tooth that has been worn down
  3. Protection for a weak tooth or to hold a cracked tooth together
  4. Concealing a misshaped tooth or severely discolored tooth
  5. Modifications for cosmetic reasons
  6. Holding a dental bridge in place
  7. Covering a dental implant

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are generally preferred as they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and tend to be very strong.

Metal Crowns

Metal crowns typically include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium), or a base-metal alloy (for example, chromium or nickel). With metal crowns there is less tooth structure that is removed and tooth wear on opposing teeth is minimum when compared to other crown types.

Temporary Crowns

Temporary crowns consist of acrylic or stainless steel and are typically used as a temporary restoration while a more permanent crown is created in a dental laboratory. At Town Square Dentistry, we offer temporary crowns for emergency dental care needs in cases of a dental accident or trauma situation.

To learn more, or to schedule a crown appointment, call us at (561) 732-9727 or fill out the online form displayed on the left-hand side column of this page.
